'Nihondaira Yume Terrace,' located in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of famous landmarks across Shizuoka, such as Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, and Miho-no-Matsubara, from its elevation of 300 meters.
The building, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates Architectural Design Office, uses abundant locally sourced wood from Shizuoka.
We visited this Nihondaira Yume Terrace with Li Jiang Hua, a graduate student at University of Shizuoka, who expressed a fondness for this location.
Li: "The view of the sea, Mount Fuji, and the city from the terrace is incredibly pleasant. It's my favorite place, and every time my friends come to Shizuoka, I always bring them here. During summer vacation, I brought my family who came to visit me from China. My hometown is inland in China, far from the sea. The beautiful scenery from the terrace left a deep impression on my family.
Every time I come to Nihondaira Yume Terrace, I take pictures of Mount Fuji. For Chinese people, Mount Fuji is one of the typical symbols of Japan. In Fujinomiya City, where I lived when I first came to Japan to study, Mount Fuji was visible every day and it was quite close. I arrived in Japan in winter, and Mount Fuji was exceptionally beautiful then. At that time, my phone's photo album was full of pictures of Mount Fuji."
Li: "I also enjoy watching the sunset from the terrace. In winter, you can see beautiful shooting stars at night. Every December, my fellow international students and I come to watch the shooting stars.
There is a monthly night market called 'Nihondaira Yomise', which is quite popular among both tourists and locals. It's a unique event where interesting shops selling food and handmade goods, and I often come here to have fun."
'Nihondaira Yume Terrace' is a spot where you can enjoy breathtaking views regardless of the season or time of day. Thank you for joining us, Li!
